Fall is a good time to give your lawn some attention. The air is cooler, the kids are back in routines, and a couple of relaxed weekends can set your yard up for spring.
Start with what you actually use
Before you buy anything, walk the yard with your family. Where do the kids play? Where does the dog run? Where do you sit when friends come over? Put your effort where your life actually happens.
A simple weekend plan
- Keep mowing at your usual height until the grass stops growing.
- Handle the leaves. A light layer can be mulched with the mower; a thick layer should be raked or bagged.
- Look for thin or bare patches. If you have a cool-season lawn, early fall is often a good window for aeration and overseeding. Timing depends on where you live.
- Shut down irrigation before your first hard freeze.
What can wait
Not everything needs to happen this season. If the list feels long, pick one thing and do it well. The yard will still be there next weekend.
