Every fall the same question comes up: do you rake the leaves or run the mower over them?

When mulching makes sense

If you can still see grass through the leaves, mulching them with your mower is usually enough. The small pieces settle into the lawn.

When to rake

If the leaves form a thick, matted layer, rake or bag them. A heavy blanket can block light and trap moisture.

Make it a family thing

Raking is one of the few yard chores kids genuinely enjoy — mostly for the jumping. Put on some music, make cocoa, and let the pile be part of the plan.

Tools

Any mulching mower and a sturdy rake will do.
